 –   Peralejos de las Truchas - Rio de la Hoz Seca
Hello - I hope this post gets to you as I believe it is somewhat important for readers of your book "Fifty Places to Fly Fish Before You Die". I was in Spain to visit a family friend and decided to go to Peralejos and fish the Hoz Seca since I had some spare time and was relatively close by in Madrid. James Prosek is correct in that Peralejos is a beautiful place and quite unique in many ways. Worth a visit in its own right just for its physical beauty. However, I feel the need to point out some aspects of the fishery. First, I would like to update the quality of the fishery of the Hoz Seca. Unfortunately, it has degenerated significantly compared to Mr. Prosek's recollection and description. I fished the river for a whole day and did not witness a single fish. I happened across a worker at the hydo-electric plant in the late afternoon, and he chuckled at the fact I was fishing the river. He indicated that there used to be a lot of trout in the river but that there were very few today. My Spanish is not that good, but I think he said that migratory birds pretty much wiped the trout out. In a way I was relieved, as I thought maybe I was completely incompetent. The Hoz Seca is a gin clear, relatively shallow stream, and the trout would have been easy prey. It is really a huge pity in that James Prosek's description of the Hoz Seca's beauty is dead on. Very sad indeed. However, another more pressing issue troubles me about recommending the Hoz Seca to your readers. It is illegal to fish the river and has been for some time. It has been a protected fishery since the 1990's I believe. Given the area is very rural, enforcement is lax to non-existent. But that is not the point. I found this out from a fisherman at the local bar after I told him about my day on the river. I was shocked to say the least. I am not sure if Mr. Prosek was aware of this fact or not, but I think it is highly unethical to promote,in effect, poaching. I know nothing can be do

 –   I see I 'm not the only ex G:T copywriter writing about fishing
My wife gave me the book for Christmas. Imagine my surprise when I saw the author's name. I'm still in the ad game, but I'm doing other writing as well. Drop me a line and let's catch up.
